Adam Savage builds his own Necronomicon (WITH TOM SULLIVAN!)

Adam combines his love of bookbinding and movie props to build a replica of the Necronomicon from The Evil Dead! And who better to help him with this build than Tom Sullivan, the creator of the special makeup effects, special effects, and stop-motion effects for The Evil Dead! Tom brings along one of his molds for the book's fleshy cover, and the two geek out over horror films and practical effects while making this iconic prop!

Fred Savage was the kid from The Princess Bride, The Wizard, and The Wonder Years. I have heard he is a major asshole, and many who have worked on sets with him would pay to see him read from the Necronomicon and get turned into a Deadite though.

I managed to convince Tom Sullivan to get involved in a fan film about 25 years ago with us both doing props or make ups for it and we couldn't afford to pay him anything.

He was great fun, enthusiastic and was coming up with new ideas for it (it's Tom Sullivan so you don't say no), he sculpted two chalices of the dead, filmed a cameo and left a hidden secret whispered something in the behind the scenes shot that I still haven't been able to work out (because I don't know anyone who can lip read) but that's Tom for you. He loves planting secrets .

I love the fact that his heart is still in zero budget F/X even though he's worked on Hollywood level projects like Evil Dead 2 and THE FLY 2. He salutes KNB and Marc Shostrum in the above video but give him some simple cardboard and stuff he can find for free and he's happier rocking out with that stuff and his own imagination.

I remember reading about this somewhere before (I can't remember where sorry) that Tom thought he'd used a latex pull made from a cast of Rich's face for his Necronomicon although he wasn't a 100% sure at the time of that interview.

It'd be fun if someone could get a new face cast from Rich to use to make one of these books now. A bit like Fans of Halloween using the old William Shatner mask to make their own Michael Myers mask.

That’s awesome, especially with Tom Sullivan involved since he created the original effects for The Evil Dead. Adam must’ve had a blast geeking out over the details while building it.
